Submission Arts Wrestling
Submission Arts Wrestling (SAW) is a Japanese catch wrestling that incorporate elements from Judo, Sambo, Olympic Wrestling, and Jujutsu. Founded in 1980’s by Shihan Hidetaka Aso who was a champion of wrestling and Sambo in Japan.
SAW is known for many variations of devastating leg locks and chains of submission holds.

Hi, my name is Toshiyuki Ito, and I am one of the original and oldest students of the SAW founder Shihan Hidetaka Aso.
And I became the new “Daihyō Shihan (代表師範)” the Grand Master of Submission Arts Wrestling now.
I came to Australia in 1993 to establish a SAW Australia Branch, after about 10 years of training under Shihan Aso in Japan.
Through such a long time experience of learning and training SAW from Shihan Aso, I am very confident about SAW and what I can teach you.
What I learnt from Shihan Aso is not only fighting skills but also life skills too, and what I experienced with him was such a great life lesson for me.
It became a great asset of my life.
I am hoping all my students will get the same feeling as that from training with me.
That will be a great pleasure for me.

About the SAW Founder Shihan Hidetaka Aso
Hidetaka Aso (麻生秀孝), 9th Dan Founder of Submission Arts Wrestling, was born in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan in 1950.
Shihan Hidetaka Aso started training Judo when he was in high school.
To help his Judo skill, he started Sambo in 1971 when he was 21 years old, and around the same time, he started training in Wrestling at Japan Defence Force Academy.
He holds; Kodokan Judo 5th Dan, Japan Sambo Association 7th Dan, Japan Amateur Wrestling Association 6th Dan, International Karate Federation, Kyokushin Budo-Kai 8th Dan.
After many successful tournament achievements with Judo, Sambo, Sumo, and Wrestling
(One of his most notable victories came during the Sambo International Championship of 1979 held in America, where the heavyweight claimed 1st place after defeating all of his 8 opponents.), he started teaching his knowledge to young people.
He and his several students practiced and experimented their skills to be useful for real fighting.
After a few years time, he named his club “Submission Arts”, and started his own martial art system with only several student with renting a small Judo dojo in 1986.
As number of students grew, he wanted his student to remember and to express that his style is grappling based fighting art.
So, in 1987, he decided to change the name to “Submission Arts Wrestling”(S.A.W.) and established it as a kind of competitive wrestling with the spirit of Budo.
He is the author of many textbooks, and chairman of prestigious martial arts federations and committees.
Shihan Hidetaka Aso is highly regarded as the master of the science of submissions.
